Over a 100 words for rain
In Britain and Ireland it rains often (Ireland is called The Emerald Isle because the countryside is so green from regular rain).

So it should come as no surprise that the British have many words or expressions for rain and especially raining. From light mist to very heavy rainfall there are both commonly understood and strictly regional expressions for the national pastime of talking about the weather.
Fret is a Scottish word for a wet mist that comes in from the sea. It doesn’t look like rain but it makes you very wet !
Drizzle is the common word for light rain. It drizzles a lot in Britain so we are so used to this weather we don’t think of it as rain :
Tom: Is it raining ?
David : No, just drizzling.
In the west of England the local word for drizzle is dimpsey :
Arthur : Bit dimpsey today innit (isn’t) it ?
The Scottish have a wonderful word for a combination of dark, cold, grey, misty and drizzly weather called dreich. The word sounds so appropriate !
Daily expressions for raining include :
It’s chucking it down.
It’s hammering down.
It’s lashing down.
It’s pouring down.
The strangest expression in Britain for heavy rain is :
It’s raining cats and dogs.
Nobody knows the origin of this expression but is still commonly used.

１００以上の雨を表す言葉
英国とアイルランドではよく雨が降ります。
（アイルランドは、いつも降る雨で地方は緑に覆われているので、エメラルド島と呼ばれています。）
というわけで、英国には雨、特に雨が降る様子を表す単語や表現が沢山あるというのは不思議もありません。淡い霞から土砂降りまで、一般的に使われる表現や地方のみで使われる表現があり、どちらも天気について語り合うという国民的気晴らしの中で使われます。
Fretという言葉は、スコットランド語で海から入り込んでくる、水分を多く含んだ霧を表します。
雨には見えませんが、その中に居ればびっしょり濡れます。
Drizzleという言葉は、小雨（霧雨）を表す時に通常使われる言葉です。英国では小雨はよく降り英国人は慣れっこで、小雨を雨とは思いません。
Tom： 雨、降ってる？
David： いや、ただの小雨だよ。
英国の西にある地方ではdrizzle小雨（霧雨）のことをdimpseyと言います。
Aethur： ちょっと今日は小雨が降ってるね。
スコットランド語には暗く、寒く、空が灰色がかった、霧や小雨の天気を表す、dreichという素晴らしい言葉があります。その言葉の響きはその天気にぴったりです！
